Update on the Recent Fire at the Salem Public Market

Update on the Salem Public Market

We're sorry to share that a fire damaged the Salem Public Market building late on the night of Wednesday, October 21. It happened after business hours, so no one was inside and there were no injuries. Thanks to the quick work of Salem Fire crews, the building was saved, though the damage is significant. The market's contents are a total loss, and the building urgently needs a new roof and a stabilizing beam. About a third of the market and its entire infrastructure will have to be rebuilt.

Salem authorities have determined the fire was intentionally set, and an arrest has been made. The case is now in the hands of law enforcement, so we can't comment on the investigation. Our focus is on rebuilding.

For generations, the Salem Public Market has been the heart of our community, where neighbors become friends and local farmers, bakers, and artisans build their livelihoods. The Salem Public Market is a nonprofit, and our treasurer, Tina Thompson, has set up the Salem Public Market Building Fund to cover the urgent structural work and the major rebuilding ahead. Our goal is $140,000, and every gift helps.
